Voices

Le Rendez-Vous (1995)

Le Rendez-Vous is a humoursly entertaining theatrical piece with no plot. The singers are instructed to dress in “tourist attire: light clothing, sun-glasses, sun hats.” The text indicates arrival at the two destinations by using Italian and Spanish words.

Voices

Parodies and Travesties: 8 Dialogues (1995)

A theatrical work in eight sections for soprano, mezzo, and piano, Parodies and Travesties explores the shifting meaning of words through wordplay, parody, sound-texts, all set as a musical banter.

Solo With Orchestra, Band

Swing out: Animations and Ruminations on a Double Reed (1995)

The bassoon converses with itself, using register, articulation, and a “dialogue” gesture to enact this exchange. This short work demonstrates the performer’s agility, expressive range, and dramatic sensibility.

Voices

Walking- Talking (1996)

In Walking-Talking, the four singers depict the conversations of those strolling down Toronto streets. One of Weinzeig’s many theatrical works, Walking-Talking uses the humour of language and the interaction of the four performers to create a witty, and at times silly, musical encounter.

Solo With Orchestra, Band

Divertimento No. 12 (1998)

The first, second, and final movements employ the woodwind quintet together, often in sharp contrast to the string orchestra; the other three movements highlight a member of the woodwind quintet. While the final movement employs the entire woodwind quintet, Weinzweig allows each instrument to shine in a series of accompanied cadenzas.

Trios

Interplay: 12 dialogues (1998)

According to Weinzweig, Interplay brings together "three disparate voices, combining the agility of the Piccolo, the articulate power of the Tuba and the Piano’s orchestral spectrum in a series of dialogues.”

Duets

Duo (1999)

The work contains several distinct ideas, each expressed through varied tempos, dynamics, articulations, and textures. The resulting musical conversations between the two violions can be competitive, with each violin asserting its voice above the other, or a more polite call-and-answer.

Keyboard

7 Piano Duets (2000)

7 Piano Duets is one of several pedagogical piano works that allows younger players to explore the textures, rhythms, and vitality of Weinzweig’s music.

Keyboard

Netscapes (2000)

Netscapes is composed of six sections, including two Interludes and one Postlude. The first, third, and fifth sections each contain six contrasting ideas; each idea is repeated three times, with the exception of one idea in the fifth section that is repeated twice. Both Interludes are slow and free, and open with the same blues-infused four measures. Postlude summarizes many aspects of the work.

Keyboard

Swing Time (2000)

The vibrancy of Swing Time lies in the changes of texture, dynamics, and articulations within a limited number of patterns.

Weinzweig composed five movements, which alternate fast and moderate tempos. A note in the score, though, indicates the freedom to perform only three movements, as long as an overall fast-moderate-fast structure is maintained.
