Solo With Orchestra, Band

Divertimento No. 1 (1946)

The relationship between the flute and the strings is based on the idea of a conversation between the solo instrument and the group of strings.

Orchestra, Band

Edge of the World: Music for Radio No. 2 (1946)

The Edge of the World: Music for Radio No. 2 is a suite based on music from the 1945-46 CBC radio series The White Empire which featured narratives about northern explorers and was accompanied with a score written by John Weinzweig. Weinzweig's music for this series uses Inuit folk melodies and rhythmic figuring to add to the northern character of the work.

Quartets

String Quartet No. 2 (1946)

A program note for this quartet by the composer reads in part: “The viola introduces the principal theme and the generating material of the first movement. Its sombre mood soon gives way to a vigorous transformation which is sustained until the viola recalls a familiar ostinato figure to conclude the movement. The second movement is lyrical, somewhat nostalgic in feeling, and tempered by muted strings and flute-like harmonics. The final movement, in the rondo manner, displays a capricious rhythm with a twist of humour.”

Solo With Orchestra, Band

Divertimento No. 2 (1947)

Weinzweig combines the three-movement structure of the original Classical genre with 12-tone technique. As opposed to a means of control, Weinzweig uses each row freely as melodic inspiration. The oboe and string orchestra have an energetic and rhythmic conversation, filled with humour as well as lyricism.

Voices

Of Time, Rain, and the World (1947)

This early work for voice and piano demonstrates two important elements of Weinzweig’s style: use of the serialist technique and a rejection of formal poetry as text.

Keyboard

Melos (1949)

Melos has two contrasting characters: Dolente, quarter note equals 80; Molto agitato, quartet note equals 200.

Stage

Red Ear of Corn Ballet (1949)

Red Ear of Corn was one of the first large-scale ballet scores in Canada. Weinzweig combined Iroquois and French-Canadian folk music elements with his own serial compositional techniques.

Orchestra, Band

Red Ear of Corn Suite (1949)

The Red Ear of Corn Suite consisted of excerpts from Weinzweig's ballet The Red Ear of Corn, a 30-minute ballet commissioned by Boris Volkoff for the Volkoff Canadian Ballet Company. The melodic and rhythmic gestures are based on Iroquois Amerindian and French Canadian folk song traditions.

Duets

Sonata "Israel" for Cello and Piano (1949)

This work combines Weinzweig's flexible approach to serialism with the hope for the then-new State of Israel and the joy of a realised dream for the Jewish community.

Keyboard

Swing a Fugue (1949)

Though not technically virtuosic, Swing a Fugue requires agility from its performer, and a sensitivity to all the many changes in dynamics and articulations. These elements combine to make a brief, but exciting musical work that is sure to entertain any audience.
